Have you ever wondered which apps are most popular for each age category of user? Nielsen has conducted a study on the topic, and their findings show high popularity of social apps for young users and rising popularity of games and deals for older users.

Facebook is the most popular app for Android users between the ages of 18 and 34, giving it the blue ribbon in both the standard 18-24 and 25-34 demographic categories. In both of these categories, the app had over an 80% reach – meaning that more than 80% of users accessed the app some time in the last 30 days. Further, the app had over a 75% reach for users age 35-44.

Facebook doesn’t have a monopoly on mobilized socializing; YouTube was the second most popular social app overall, with a 64% reach for 18- to 24-year-olds, a 56% reach for 25- to 34-year-olds, and a 51% reach for 35- to 44-year-olds.

angry birdsAcross all fronts, those who use their mobile phone to play games tended towards flinging the infamous Angry Birds at green pigs. The Angry Birds app had its highest reach in the 35-44 demographic, at 35%, compared to 22% for the 18-24 categories and 29% for 25-34. The 35-44 category also seemed most likely to use their phone for shopping. It’s worth noting that 24% in this category had used the Amazon AppStore in the last 30 days.

Other study insights include the low reach of the Google+ app for those age 24 and under and the low reach of Groupon for those 24 and under.

Nielsen used their compilation of Smartphone Analytics, which pulls from “thousands of consumer panelists” as well as the Nielsen device meters used on smartphone devices, according to their report.

Do these statistics match your personal experience? How will these trends continue in the future? And what’s your high score on Angry Birds?
